I left Liverpool College of Art in 1970 with a degree in Fine Art / Sculpture. I did various things in the immediate years following including some furniture design and making, a couple of years as an art college lecturer, a couple of years as a civil engineering technician and then the inevitable secondary art teaching.

After several years in secondary education, I realised that it wasn't for me and I spent the following sixteen years as Head of Art in Adult Education at Bradford College. During this time I was fortunate in that I was able to do my own work alongside the teaching and I exhibited on a fairly regular basis.

In 1999, I was approached to use my skills to make large, three-dimensional signs, mainly for Scottish and Newcastle Breweries. Since that initial venture, I developed that commercial aspect of my work and I have supplied sculptural signage and other related 3D work to companies, large and small.

Some of these include other breweries, such as Cornerstone and Mitchells & Butlers, Car Plan (displays at the NEC Birmingham), signage for a Lego subsidiary company, local education authorities (bas-relief coats of arms for several schools) and many smaller companies. For one of these, I was commissioned to create a sculpture for the International Offshore Exhibition at the AECC Aberdeen.

I have designed and made trophies for presentation (Asian Business Awards, Yorkshire, twice) and several sporting events. One of my more recent projects was making sculpted bases for a series of waymarker signs for Peterhead Town, Aberdeenshire.

I can and have worked to supplied designs and briefs and have designed work to clients briefs. I work in all media and have my own bronze foundry which I mainly use for my own work which I exhibit and sell through galleries and to commission.

Unfortunately, most of this commercial work stopped in 2009 with the financial crisis of that time, meaning that I was unable to supply at a competitive price.

I have continued to produce my own work alongside going back to secondary teaching until I retired from this in 2025. Now I can concentrate on doing my own work, although I still produce the occasional commercial piece.
